About Hills Elementary

In 1962 the Liberty Township Board drew up plans for a new school. A bond issue was passed for constructing and equipping the building. In July of 1964 the building site of about 6 acres was purchased. Sidewalks were donated that lead from the ballpark to the school grounds.  Hills School opened in the fall of 1965 with five teachers serving grades 1-8. On July 1, 1966, the school became part of the Iowa City School District.

Hills Elementary School is located six miles south of Iowa City and east of U.S. Highway 218 in the town of Hills. The school serves Hills and all or parts of the following townships: Liberty, Sharon, Union, East Lucas and West Lucas. The school has an enrollment of approximately 155 from Preschool to 6th grade. Hills students attend Northwest Junior High and West High School.

The physical facilities, which are designed to accommodate 200 students, include a 1970 addition of eight classrooms and a large media center. The addition is carpeted and air conditioned. The original building houses four classrooms, an art room, a resource room, a gymnasium, and an office. These rooms were remodeled in 2006.. Smart Boards are available in each classroom.  A black-topped area behind the school and an additional five acres provide an extensive playground area.
